Georgia in the USSR
From 1921 to 1991 Georgia was part of the Soviet Union.
In this period the square was renamed twice: in 1938 it became Beria Square, and in 1953 Lenin Square.
Life on the square
In Soviet years the square was a venue for official parades and public events.
On 6 November 1967 a metro station opened at the square, making the centre easier to reach.

The end of the period
In 1990/1991 Georgia regained independence and the square was once again named Freedom Square.
That closed the square’s Soviet chapter and opened its modern, independent history.
