What happened

In November 2003 mass protests broke out across the country after disputed parliamentary elections.

The protests centred on Freedom Square and on the area around Parliament on Rustaveli Avenue.

The outcome

President Eduard Shevardnadze resigned, and Mikheil Saakashvili came to power.

The events became known as the Rose Revolution, and the square has remained a frequent site of political gatherings since.

The square today

Today the square is an ordinary transport and ceremonial space, but it remains the city’s main public gathering point.

The Freedom Monument at its centre was unveiled in 2006.
