How the space is laid out
The square is open and several streets converge on it — among them Rustaveli Avenue, which runs north.
Tbilisi City Hall stands on the square, so the area is well maintained and lit.
The monument as an axis
The Freedom Monument in the middle ties the space together and forms its main visual axis.
The 35 m granite column is visible from a distance and gives the square a clear orientation point.
The link to Old Tbilisi
To the south of the square the streets of Old Tbilisi begin — Sololaki and Abanotubani.
Because of this layout the square is a natural transition point between the new and the old city.
